How-to: Re-Waxing Barbour
Depending on how much you wear it, you want to re-wax your Barbour
annually or bi-annually to maintain its waterproofness, resistibility to wear-and-tear and the jackets aesthetics.
Before you start
Re-Waxing your beloved jacket is not complicated and can be done by yourself. All you need is a tin of Barbour Wax, a sponge or cloth, a bowl or pan and some water. To make it easy for yourself, lay the jacket on a clean, dry and flat surface which can either be cleaned easily or it doesn’t matter if it gets stained with the wax.
First Step
Using a sponge or cloth and some cold water, rinse the outside of your
jacket.
Don’t throw it in the washing machine or use warm/hot water as this will
remove the wax permanently and make it unable to be re-waxed.
Second Step
Fill a bowl or pan with water that is warm enough to melt the Barbour Wax.
Remove the lid of your tin of wax and put it into the bowl. Wait for about 20 minutes and the wax is ready to be used.
Third Step
Once the Wax is melted down, take a sponge or cloth and work the wax
into your jacket. Make sure to focus on seams, creases and dry patches as these tend to be weak spot in the waterproofness.
When working on the jacket, put the tin of Wax back into the bowl of hot water to make sure the Wax stays softened.
Keep the wax away from the inside of the jacket, the inside of the pockets and the Corduroy collar. Lastly, wipe off any excess wax from the jacket.
Final Step
Hang the jacket in a warm and dry place, so the Wax is allowed to dry at
least overnight but preferably for more than a day.
After Re-Waxing and drying, the jacket may lose some excess wax so be
cautious around leather, upholstery or other precious items.
